North Bengal Medical College

North Bengal Medical College and Hospital, originally envisioned by Dr. B. C. Roy, was established in 1968 as the first medical college in North Bengal. The planning was carried out by Ajit Kumar Panja, the state health minister at the time. Prof. Ajit Kr. Duttagupta became the first official principal when the college was called North Bengal University Medical College. In August 1978, the college was renamed North Bengal Medical College & Hospital, and control shifted from North Bengal University to the Government of West Bengal.

Initially, premedical classes began on November 6, 1967, at Jackson Medical School in Jalpaiguri. The 2nd to 6th batches completed their premedical studies at Raigunj University College. Starting with the 7th batch, students attended the NBMC campus in Sushrutanagar. The first-year MBBS classes for the 1st batch began on November 18, 1968, at the North Bengal University campus, and by 1972, MBBS classes were being held at the current NBMC campus in Sushrutanagar. Early students had to go to SSKM Hospital for clinical training, with the first two batches also completing their internships there. In 1978, the college was officially recognized by the Medical Council of India when the first batch received their registration numbers.

Eligibility Criteria for Admission to North Bengal Medical College

Indian students should follow the NMC (MCI) guidelines to study MBBS in Bangladesh. Here’s what you need:

About Campus

At North Bengal Medical College & Hospital, students must adhere to a strict dress code, with male students wearing a white shirt, navy blue trousers, black shoes, and a full-sleeved white apron, while female students wear light-coloured salwar-kameez with preferred shoes and a

full-sleeved apron. Students are required to carry their identity cards at all times on campus, and smoking is strictly forbidden across the college, hospital, canteen, and hostel premises.

Fashionable or untidy appearances are discouraged, and any acts of indiscipline, such as abstention from classes without permission or vandalism, will be dealt with seriously, including fines or expulsion. Drug and alcohol abuse, as well as political activities, are not tolerated, and students found guilty are subject to strict disciplinary actions. Students and guardians must sign a bond to abide by college rules upon admission. Essential items like textbooks, laptops, and medical equipment must be bought by the students themselves. A minimum of 75% attendance is required to sit for professional exams, and in case of absences, a written statement from parents is needed for approval. Furthermore, students must meet the eligibility criteria of the University of Dhaka and BMDC and complete a mandatory one-year internship as per BMDC regulations.
